“The Scientific Ghosthunter” by Christopher Tillman

(c) 1998, revised 1999, 2002, 2024

Campuses across America are seen by some to be the birthplace of a rich history of academic and social tradition. But, to ghosthunters, they are seen as the birthplace of some of the more vibrant and haunting tales of supernatural phenomena.

Fraternity and sorority houses, theater departments, and dormitories are among the many buildings on campus that have become home to the departed spirits born of tragedies and suicides. Apparitions, poltergeist activity, and more are reported off and on throughout the years.

No book of folklore would be complete without at least a handful of stories detailing supernatural exploits taking place on campuses all over this country.

It’s easy to see why educational institutions, specifically universities, are home to spooks and specters. There is no other place where you’ll find such a high concentration of youthful and energetic people. Universities are a perfect breeding ground for paranormal phenomena for obvious reasons:

A.) High levels of mental energy.

B.) A party-til-you-puke lifestyle.

C.) Experimentation with consciousness-altering drugs.

D.) A sexually-charged atmosphere.

E.) And, of course, universities have their share of suicides and tragic accidents.

When you mix all these things together, you have the perfect recipe for paranormal phenomena.

Like I stated above, the areas most commonly affected are normally those that are centered around the daily life of students. Dormitories, fraternity houses, sorority houses, and the like are often the scene of late-night apparitions and poltergeist-like activity.

University theater departments are also sometimes home to campus ghosts, absorbing the mental energy of performances and reliving by-gone days.
