The railroad tracks at Vernon Junction are said to be haunted by the ghosts of a woman and her children, as well as the crazed, murderous phantom of Gruesome Gus.
According to legend, in 1912, an escaped mental patient happened across a woman leading her two children into town near Vernon Junction.
This escaped patient, an old man known as Gruesome Gus, advanced on the trio, chasing after the woman. When he overtook her, he wasted no time strangling the life from her body right in front of her horrified children, laughing as he did so.
The children’s screams of terror only served to enrage Gus further and he began chasing after them, towards a set of railroad tracks and into the path of an oncoming train. Gus and the two children were struck and killed by several tons of speeding steel.
Today, visitors to the area report hearing the ghostly screams and crying of the mother weeping for her lost children, as well as hearing the maniacal laughter of Gruesome Gus. Some even report having heard a disembodied voice, a woman’s voice, cry out, “RUN!”
